No AI-specific law; existing Privacy Act applies
New Zealand regulates AI's use of personal data through the existing Privacy Act, not a dedicated AI statute. The voluntary Algorithm Charter for Aotearoa sets expectations for algorithm use in government but isn't binding law, and there's no dedicated AI regulator.
Law Commission review starting
The Law Commission has confirmed it will begin a review of legal issues around automated decision-making in the public sector. It's a review, not a bill, worth watching rather than acting on yet.
